Activity 5: Have a Ball

“I’ll tell you how we can manage. There’s a long hall out there, and we can dance grandly, and no one will see us.”

Laurie, Chapter 3, “The Laurence Boy”

QUILTING HISTORY

This reminds us of Louisa May herself. In 1861 she was living in Orchard House, the Alcott family home in Concord, Massachusetts. In spite of the fact that Louisa considered needlework an “abomination,” she wrote to a friend that she was “sewing violently on patriotic blue shirts.” Before her writing career took off, Louisa often took in needlework to help support her family.
